Houston Area Theaters

Hobby Center

The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts is managed and operated by the Hobby Center Foundation, formerly known as the Houston Music Hall Foundation. The Foundation is organized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
 

Alley Theatre

The Alley produces up to 16 plays each year in its newly renovated Theatre, ranging from the best current work, to re-invigorated classic plays, to new plays by contemporary writers. The Alley is home to a resident company of actors. In addition, the Alley engages theatre artists of every discipline – actors, designers, composers, playwrights – who work on individual productions throughout each season as visiting artists.

 

Society for the Performing Arts

The SPA's missions is to enrich the cultural life of Houston by presenting the world’s best performing artists and enlightening and educating youth and others in the joys of the performing arts. They primarily perform out of Jones Hall in downtown Houston. 

 

Miller Outdoor Theatre

The Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park hosts a variety of musical, dance, and theatrical performances throughout the year. 

 

Stages

Founded in 1978, Stages has grown to become Houston’s sixth largest nonprofit performing arts producer overall, and the largest outside of Houston’s downtown theater district. Stages are set for smaller, more intimate audiences, with seating from 135-250 people.  

 

Playhouse 1960

Playhouse 1960 has been operating in northwest Houston since 1973 celebrating over 500 productions and 10,000 different performers! Playhouse 1960 is a community theatre that relies on ticket sales and donations to operate.

 

Stageworks Theater

Stageworks Theatre's mission is to enrich our community through a variety of theatre and arts education.  We seek to entertain, inspire, challenge, and educate with positive values, as well as to provide an enjoyable outlet for creative community involvement through the production of high-quality, affordable, suburban entertainment. Since their inception in November 2005, the have continuously endeavored to demonstrate our core values of fun, respect, integrity, excellence and diversity.

Other Local College Theaters

U. Houston - Kathrine G. McGovern School of Theatre and Dance

The University of Houston School of Theatre and Dance features performances from graduate and undergraduate students in theatre, music, dance, and opera. 

 

U. Houston Downtown O'Kane Theatre

The O'Kane Theatre is part of the Department of Arts & Communication and has been a part of the University of Houston-Downtown for over thirty-five years. Shows are performed by UH-D students, faculty, staff and alumni.

 

Rice University Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts

The Rice Theatre Program produces two stage productions per year (one in the fall and one in the spring). 

 

Sam Houston State University - Theatre and Musical Theatre

the SHSU Theatre Department performs several shows each semester with one musical theatre performance. 

Local High School Theatres

For high school theater departments, look for a play in the fall (September - October), a musical in early spring (late January - early February), and one act or student directed plays in the late spring (late March - early April).
